Glazed Extension Buying Guide

A glazed structure has many different names, such as a conservatory, orangery, glass box, and garden room, to name but a few! Basically, it’s a room, both roof and walls made predominantly of glass so that natural light can flood in. Natural light is well-known for improving mood and giving you that connection with your garden and the beautiful ever-changing sky—not often seen from inside UK homes!

If you want to bring more natural light into your home without adding or replacing the whole structure, or you require the privacy that brick walls bring, you can consider a glass roof, rooflight or lantern.CBP are approved installers and Premium Partners for some of the best brands of Wintergardens, Glazed Extensions, Canopy Roofs, Garden Structures and more. Look at your options, all of which has a clear point of difference:

GLAZED EXTENSION

A glazed extension is the premium choice for the WOW factor instead of the traditional brick built extension. It is a thermally insulated, double or triple-glazed structure that extends the building with no internal door required between the existing structure and the new extension. The roof is made of glass, and the walls are a mix of fixed glazed panels and bifolding or sliding doors. This means you can extend and use the extra space all year around, and they are secure, the same as a main entrance. These are very popular for kitchens, lounges, and dining areas.

Solarlux is our premium product supplier for glazed extensions and glass houses. Their premium structures made from high-quality, sustainable, low-maintenance aluminium provide a modern, sleek look that complements traditional and new architecture. Solarlux designs and manufactures its products only in its state-of-the-art factory in Germany, which are shipped straight to us and ready for us to install. Solarlux regularly trains us at CBP on how to install their products.

A Solarlux premium wintergarden glazed extension is a thermally insulated glazed roof structure designed to add or extend your living/commercial space. It is made with high-quality, sustainable, low-maintenance aluminium, available in 30 RAL colours as standard or sustainable wood. The addition of secure double or triple-glazed sliding/bi-folding doors or fixed panels means there is no requirement for an internal door between the existing and new space, which means the new room can be used and enjoyed all year round thanks to its thermal-insulating and security features.

The Akzent Plus, with its filigree rafters, gives the roof a slimline look and maximises the amount of light. The roof is flat on the inside due to its external structural members and can be used to create large roof constructions with roof pitches from 5° to 45°.

The Akzent Vision, with its deliberate visual steel cables and stainless steel components, presents a striking design with unique aesthetics and clean lines. Its versatility allows for roof pitches from 5° to 45°.

The Avantgarde, with a roof pitch from 5° to 45°, has warming wood on the inside and protective modern aluminium on the outside. The high-quality natural wood internally gives the space a cosy ambience and allows flexibility for any design roof shape.

  • High performance shading: Awnings provide effective shade on the outside to avoid the ‘too hot in summer’ scenario. Stylish interior pleated blinds also help to keep the space private and cool.
  • Wind and temperature sensors: For optimum climate control, combine wind and temperature sensors with automated shading and openings to regulate the temperature even when you’re not there.
  • Lighting: Include subtle spotlight rails mounted under the individual rafters with a range of fixed and swivelling LED, halogen, and spotlights.

CONSERVATORY

Your choice of ventilation, heating, lighting and automation will provide the perfect climate and ambience. You can watch the changing seasons in comfort and, in the warmer months, open up the space to embrace the outside. A full range of additional accessories include:

Conservatories, typically with pointed/pitched glass roofs, are also thermally insulated and an excellent alternative to the premium Glazed Extension, but they generally have less structural integrity and comforts.

Prefix Systems has 25 years of experience fabricating lightweight roof systems suitable for conservatory roof refurbishments or replacements. Whether you’re embarking on a new extension project or considering a conservatory roof replacement, the tiled WARMroof® and aluminium S2 systems stand out as the most configurable and structurally robust options in the UK market.

The tiled WARMroof® system is versatile in its performance and design. These insulated and tiled roofs are designed to solve the most common conservatory problem—excessive heat in summer and chilly interiors in winter. The system can be tailored to fit all roof styles, including complex conservatory roof shapes. There are three stock tile options with a wide range of tile and slate finishes in terms of colour and texture.

If you’re worried about losing natural light when opting for a solid roof, the WARMroof® Hybrid is the answer. This innovative system allows for the integration of Velux roof lights or fixed double 28mm or triple 44mm glazed panels while maintaining its thermal properties. The internal pelmet detail not only enhances the aesthetics but also offers the option to add downlighters and speakers or affix blinds and curtains, giving you full control over your conservatory’s ambience.

For a modern aesthetic, Prefix fabricates the Sheerline S2 aluminium roof, designed, made, and manufactured in the UK to your exact specifications. The thermally efficient roof has a slimline appearance and customisable options such as variable internal pelmet and aluminium gutter shroud. It is available from stock in white, grey, or rosewood finishes or any RAL colour or combination. Georgian, Victorian, and lean-to styles can be combined with valleys and box gutters to form various designs.

ORANGERY

Historically this was a room where orange and other fruit trees were protected during the winter. Generally, now it has a brick base or brick wall with windows and doors, a flat perimeter roof and a central glazed roof lantern. It has more brickwork than a conservatory and is a mix of a conservatory and a traditional extension.

iX250 Ltd are specialists UK manufacturers of the IX250 orangery roof system. Their prefab aluminium subframe roof extension system provides a living space that can be used all year round due to the WARMroof® technology. They can be designed to the exact project specification and support a glazed roof lantern within a flat roof area.

This fast-build extension WARMroof® system can achieve U-values as low as 0.18W/m2k, meeting Building Regulation energy efficiency requirements. They have designed quality aluminium guttering and decorative cornice options to complete the timeless look of your orangery.

GARDEN GLASS CANOPY/HOUSE

Solarlux single-glazed glass house comes in two parts; the glazed overhead canopy can be installed alone with posts to provide overhead protection from the rain to cover a patio/terrace or as a carport.

With the addition of glazed slide-and-turn panels to form side walls, a glass canopy is then transformed into a striking glass house/room structure. The glass panels can be fully closed for protection from the wind and rain or conveniently stacked into the corner to open up the whole area entirely in good weather conditions. Alternatively, you can choose from sliding and bi-folding doors and fixed panes.

This multi-function structure is popular in the garden for lounging, dining, socialising or as an outdoor kitchen, carport, hot tub and pool cover. Solarlux modern glass roof canopies made from premium sustainable aluminium are available in 30 RAL colours as standard and come in four styles:

Acubis: This almost flat canopy, with its 2° roof pitch, provides a modern cubist aesthetic. The internal structural members lend the canopy an air of elegance, and a low, single-piece wall joint lends it a lightweight feel.

Atrium Plus: With a roof pitch from 5 – 45°, it allows the creation of extremely large areas of glass with great distances between the posts and complex custom shapes. Its design and delicate profile are distinctive, and the optional permanent roof ventilation system keeps the climate comfortable at all times.

Alerio: The monopitch roof can be designed with a pitch between 5° and 20° and can be used to build incredibly delicate-looking structures. Its internal structural members lend it a particularly striking appearance and give it a seamless external flat roof surface.

Auro: With a roof pitch from 5° to 45°, it has natural wood internally with aluminium cladding that provides both a traditional and modern look. The wood element is sustainable laminated spruce as standard; other types of wood are available.

There are a range of accessories to suit your requirements:

  • Solar protective awnings: These provide perfect shading from the sun, and they can be installed on top, vertically, or as an underglass awning.
  • Integrated LED lighting: Combined LED spotlights allow you to get the most out of warm summer nights.
  • Ventilation: Sleek, ultra-slim sliding doors are used as transparent side elements for glass canopies, providing essential ventilation alongside space-saving style.
  • Infrared heaters: The multi-award winning Heatscope™ Design radiant heater offers less light and more heat, utilising modern infrared technology to deliver cosy warmth

GLASS ROOF, LEAN-TO AND FILL-IN GLAZED AREAS

You may wish to have a glass roof, but have the traditional mix of brick, windows, and doors—particularly if you are in an overlooked area where you want the light to flood in from above but keep some privacy from your numbers.

Glazed roofs add a light and airy ambience to any space and can also be used between buildings to link the old and new and for passages with no natural light—called a lean-to or fill-in roof. They can also add light to a dark corridor or be used as a link between two buildings, blending the old and the new with a modern, stunning aesthetic.

Depending on your thermal requirements, the Solarlux thermally insulated wintergarden or single-glazed glass roof systems can be installed in aluminium or wood/aluminium. In addition, the Prefix Sheerline S2 canopy thermally efficient aluminium roof system would be suitable.

Established in 1973, Howells Glazing is a trusted, family-run business and a major supplier of top-quality roof glazing products manufactured in the UK. Specializing in heritage-approved, thermally broken aluminium double glazing, they have the expertise to customize any glass lean-to or fill-in to perfectly match your project requirements.

LANTERNS & ROOFLIGHTS

What is the difference?

Flat rooflights (also known as skylights) are sleek and minimal and sit flush with the roof, providing a clean, modern look without altering the roofline. Howells Glazing manufactures thermally efficient aluminium rooflight styles, ranging from fixed to opening, flat to pitched, and even walk-on versions. They can be installed on flat or pitched roofs. Remote control and smart technology are also an option.

Roof lanterns are 3D glass units that protrude from the roof surface, providing a large glazed area with a classic aesthetic. They can be made in any shape: rectangle, octagonal, pyramid, and wall abutting. The Sheerline S1 thermally efficient aluminium lanterns are slim with consistent 50mm rafter, hip, and ridge sightlines. They also feature an integral LED light channel around the perimeter of the roof-opening roof vents.
